The last stop on the back-half route: NYC → train to Toronto → Niagara Falls, Ontario → cross the US border into Buffalo → fly Buffalo (BUF) to JFK → international flight home. This file is the city itself, not the falls — that's a separate crossing covered in the Niagara USA dossier. Prices in USD with NZD in brackets, 1 NZD = 0.587 USD.
Buffalo sits about 25 miles (30–40 min) short of the Niagara Falls, NY attractions already covered elsewhere — don't try to fold a falls side-trip into these nights as well. The part you'll actually use — downtown, Canalside, Elmwood Village, Delaware Park — is a compact, walkable cluster; a car or rideshare only matters for the Martin House, Duff's, or Silo City. On the ground it reads as a real Rust Belt city mid-revival: solid early-1900s architecture, a genuinely rebuilt waterfront, much quieter than NYC or Toronto. If you only have one evening: Anchor Bar for dinner, then a walk at Canalside — everything else below is for a second day.
| # | Thing | Type | Why it's worth my time | Cost | Hours | Book ahead? | Best time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Anchor Bar (original, 1047 Main St) | Food | The literal birthplace of the Buffalo wing — invented here in 1964. Original building, not a chain outpost | Wings $15.99–$23/dozen; mains $12–20pp | 1–1.5 hrs | No — walk-in; call ahead for weekend group seating | Dinner any night, or lunch to dodge the queue |
| 2 | Darwin D. Martin House | Sight | Frank Lloyd Wright's most complete Prairie-style residential complex anywhere, restored art-glass throughout | Adult $19 | 1.5–2 hrs | Days — martinhouse.org; closed Tuesdays | Late morning tour slot |
| 3 | Buffalo AKG Art Museum | Sight | One of the oldest public art collections in the US, split across the 1905 original and a striking 2023 glass volume hovering above Delaware Park | Adult $24; pay-what-you-wish M&T First Fridays | 1.5–2 hrs | Same day normally; book ahead for a Friday evening | Late morning/early afternoon; closed Tue & Wed, open till 8pm Fri |
| 4 | Elmwood Village | Walk | Buffalo's actual functioning neighbourhood — 200+ independent shops and restaurants along one walkable avenue | Free to walk; coffee/snack $5–15pp | 1.5–2 hrs | No | Late afternoon into evening |
| 5 | Canalside | Experience | Derelict industrial land rebuilt into a free lakefront park, with a reconstructed stretch of the original 1825 Erie Canal | Free entry; kayak/paddleboat rental extra | 1–2 hrs | No — same day only if renting a boat on a busy weekend | Early evening, golden hour on the lake |
| 6 | City Hall observation deck | Sight | Free 28th-floor deck in a 1931 Art Deco skyscraper with Iroquois-motif reliefs, wraparound view over Lake Erie into Canada | Free | 30–45 min | No | Weekday morning — Mon–Fri 9am–4pm only, no weekend access |
| 7 | Delaware Park | Walk | Frederick Law Olmsted's only true "park" in his Buffalo system — same designer as Central Park and Niagara Falls State Park, a throughline across three legs of this trip | Free | 1–1.5 hrs | No | Morning |
| 8 | Buffalo History Museum | Sight | The one surviving building from the 1901 Pan-American Exposition, holds artifacts from President McKinley's assassination at that same fair | Pay-what-you-wish, ~$12 recommended; free 3rd Fridays | 1–1.5 hrs | No | Midday, paired with Delaware Park |
| 9 | Explore Buffalo walking tour | Experience | Docent-led, gets you inside buildings self-guided visitors only see from the street — including parts of City Hall | ~$18pp | 1.5 hrs | Days — explorebuffalo.org, reservations required | Whatever slot you book |
| 10 | Buffalo Central Terminal | Sight | 17-storey 1929 Art Deco station, empty since 1979. Interior tours currently suspended for construction — exterior + free self-guided audio tour still worth the detour | Free (exterior/audio); interior only via occasional ticketed events | 30–45 min | No for exterior; verify if an interior event is on | Late afternoon, good light on the tower |
| 11 | Duff's Famous Wings | Food | Locals' actual pick over Anchor Bar — saucier, crispier, no-frills diner. Only worth it to settle the debate yourself | Wings ~$16–22/dozen | 1.5–2 hrs incl. drive | No, but need a car/rideshare — it's in Amherst, not downtown | Dinner |
| 12 | Charlie the Butcher (beef on weck) | Food | Predates the Buffalo wing by roughly a century, arguably the more distinctly local dish. Sits right on the route out to BUF | ~$10–14pp | 30–45 min | No | Lunch, ideally on departure day |
| 13 | Sponge candy | Food | Buffalo's third specialty after wings and beef on weck — caramelised-sugar, chocolate-coated, essentially unknown outside Western New York | $3–10pp | 15–20 min | No | Anytime, an easy add-on |
| 14 | Silo City | Experience | Buffalo was one of the world's largest grain ports in the early 1900s — the best-preserved evidence of it anywhere. The Vertical tour is the only way inside | Vertical tour $50pp; cheaper ground tours may run | 2 hrs incl. travel | Days — explorebuffalo.org, groups capped small and sell out | Late afternoon light |
| Thing | Why skip it | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Broadway Market | Famous for Easter and Dyngus Day, neither near September — outside that window it's a slower market with fewer stalls open | Elmwood Village or Canalside instead |
| Buffalo Zoo | A perfectly ordinary city zoo needing 2–3 hrs for a payoff that isn't distinctly "Buffalo" | Delaware Park or the AKG instead, both nearby |
| Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino | Same slots-and-tables room as any casino anywhere — nothing Buffalo-specific | Canalside or Elmwood Village bars for actual local character |
| Squeezing a Niagara Falls (NY) side-trip into your Buffalo nights | 30–40 min each way, deserves its own half-day, not a rushed add-on | Do the falls from Fallsview before crossing into Buffalo, not after |
